Gasoline continues to rise in price, and now more than ever, it is important to apply all the techniques that allow us to see considerable savings.

In the previous note, Fuel savings tips to save on gas in Canada, we shared data to check that our vehicles were mechanically well and were not consuming more gasoline than expected.

Today we want to present some tips that help us save, but from the driving and planning part.

1. Slow down

Aggressive driving such as speeding, rapid acceleration and braking often wastes gasoline. It can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and by 5% around town.

2. Reduce idling

Turn off your engine when you are stopped for more than 60 seconds, except when in traffic. The average vehicle with a three-litre engine wastes 300 millilitres—more than one cup—of fuel for every 10 minutes it idles.

3. Accelerate gently

The harder you accelerate the more fuel you use. In the city, you can use less fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently. To be as fuel-efficient as possible, take 5 seconds to accelerate your vehicle up to 20 kilometres per hour from a stop.

4. Use cruise control

Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, saves gasoline.

5. Don’t carry unnecessary weight

Remove items such as salt, sand and sports equipment from your vehicle. The less it weighs, the less fuel your vehicle will use. The fuel consumption of a mid-size car increases by about 1% for every 25 kilograms of weight it carries.

6. Plan ahead

Plan your route to avoid backtracking and rush-hour traffic.

7. Close your windows

If driving at 100 km/h or greater, keep the windows closed. Open windows create a lot of aerodynamic drag, which can lower your fuel efficiency when driving at high speeds. Also, remove the roof rack if you’re not using it, for up to 10% savings on fuel.

8. Combine trips

Longer excursions let your vehicle’s engine warm up to its most fuel-efficient temperature. Run your errands one after the other.

By driving correctly and making smart decisions, you can save several dollars every time you fill up your gas tank.
