The optimal performance of a car greatly depends on its maintenance. Certain elements need more care, especially in summer or winter when the extreme temperatures have a greater impact on vehicle components.
While it is not in plain sight, one of the most important things is oil. As we know, any engine needs to be well greased to run at its best.
The function of the oil is crucial because it’s in charge of lubricating the moving parts of the engine so that the friction does not deteriorate them. The oil also helps to maintain the adequate temperature in the different components of the vehicle. Another function of the oil is to keep the engine clean. When passing through the filter, the oil is in charge of retaining those elements that can dirty and damage the engine.
Now that we know the importance of changing the oil, the next logical question would be: When to change the vehicle oil and filter.
And the answer will depend mainly on your driving habits and the type of vehicle you have. BDS technicians recommend always following the guidelines set by the manufacturer, but keeping in mind the following criteria:
- The number of kilometers covered by the car.
- The time elapsed since the last oil change.
- Time on the road and where you drive (The engine suffers more if many short trips are made during the day, rather than a long road trip)
- The type of oil and its quality.
In general, although it depends on several factors, the ideal is to check the oil level every 3,000 km, so it is important to check the mileage of your vehicle frequently. Another point to keep in mind is the color of the oil. If it’s very dark or almost black, it means that it’s dirty and it’s better to change it as soon as possible.
Remember that if your car has been parked for a long time, it is very likely that the oil will also change. So before starting it, we recommend you quickly check the condition of the oil.
At BDS, we are open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, so if you need to change the oil in any of your vehicles, you can call us at (416) 757-5671 or send us an email at service@bdsfleet.ca and schedule your appointment.
